The one symptom of depression which gets overlooked quite often is fatigue. Living with fatigue can be a challenge, but Kristen has some tips on how to cope with fatigue.
If you don’t know what fatigue is, it is extreme exhaustion, tiredness, feeling of heaviness, and you don’t have any energy for things you used to like to do.
Thankfully, there are some ways for you to cope with fatigue.
Use Exercise to Beat Fatigue
When I start feeling fatigued, one of the things that I like to do is exercise, either in the gym or just walking around my neighborhood.
The goal for this is to get your blood moving. If we sit there, feel drained or feel like we don’t want to do anything, that’s not going to help our fatigue. It’s going to make it worse and make us more tired.
People who exercise feel a higher amount of self-confidence and self-esteem. It makes you just feel so much better about yourself because you’re doing something. It gives you a sense of purpose.
Now, you don’t have to go the gym to exercise; you can do it at home, you can do some yoga, pilates or go for a walk with your dog. The more we get moving, the more the blood is pumping through our bodies and the less tired we’re going to feel.
Don’t Forget to Drink Plenty of Water
Sometimes dehydration makes us feel more tired, makes us feel more fatigued, and we don’t want that to happen. So remember to drink enough water a day. I’m guilty of this.
I drink maybe two glasses of water a day, but I know that I should be drinking more water. Sometimes we get that hungry feeling in our stomachs. It’s not just because we’re hungry; sometimes it could be because we’re thirsty.
Go to Bed Early
Your sleeping patterns could have everything to do with the feelings of fatigue that you have throughout the day. If you go to bed soon and get enough sleep throughout the night, this could help you in the morning.
My suggestion is to get six to eight hours of sleep. I know sometimes it’s difficult and you can’t just go to bed early that first day, but work up to it. Sometimes it takes a few days. Go to bed 15 minutes earlier than you usually do, then do it 30 minutes earlier, then an hour earlier.
I’m not afraid to say on the internet that I go to bed at 9 o’clock each night because I know that I’m going to feel better the next day. I don’t be tired; I won’t be irritable, I won’t be depressed. I won’t have that dragging feeling if I go to bed earlier.
Eat More Often – Eat for Energy
I know sometimes I get fatigued throughout the day because I forget to eat because either feeling stressed or depressed about the things are going on in my life, or I just don’t eat enough. I skip breakfast, or I skip lunch, and I just forget about it.
My suggestion for you, if you have this problem, is to bring snacks with you. I carry granola bars; I have trail mix, and I bring yogurts to school. This seems to help me in my fatigue symptoms.
Sometimes we get fatigued because we forget to eat or we’re eating less or skipping meals, which is very, very bad for our overall, physical health. We need to remember to nourish our bodies on a daily basis.
